Major research trends: Geographical variation in Scotch pine and Norway spruce, plus tree selection and breeding, provenance selection and breeding of lodgepole pine in the North-West of Russia

Keywords: nitrogen, metabolisation, mineral nutrition, photosynthesis, respiration, growth, adaptation, seasonal and ontogenetic rhythms, conifers

The main research line: determining the pattern of nitrogen and other macro- and microelement utilization by conifers with respect to the physiological status of the plant, and environmental conditions. Within this problem the pattern of nitrogenous compounds supply and metabolisation in the root system, their transport to the above-ground organs, distribution and reutilization are studied in the case with Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). The relationships between pine nitrogen nutrition and status, and carbon nutrition, carbohydrate metabolism, growth and adaptation to the environment are analysed with regard to seasonal dynamics and ontogenesis. The balance of the nitrogen introduced in the soil is studied at the plant organism, forest plantation and natural stand levels using the isotopic indication technique. The problem of diagnosing mineral nutrition in pine is investigated.
