On February 19, Karelian Research Centre RAS elected its president.

The candidates were: Acting President Olga Bakhmet and Dr. (DSc) of Economy Pavel Druzhinin. Two ballot stations were set up for staff working in different buildings.
Pursuant to KarRC RAS Charter, the candidate that has received the highest number of votes given by KarRC staff members is considered elected by the staff, provided that more than a half of employees have taken part in the vote. 649 of the 822 employees have taken part in the vote: 519 votes were given to Olga Bakhmet, 118 to Pavel Druzhinin.

KarRC RAS staff have congratulated Olga Bakhmet on having been elected the President. She responded by thanking the opponent, Pavel Druzhinin, for participation and the audience for support and vote of confidence, as well as remarked that a lot will have to be done to develop and promote the Centre.

Olga N. Bakhmet was born in Petrozavodsk in 1969, graduated from high school in the city and entered the Biology & Soil Science Faculty of the Leningrad State University, graduating in 1992.

1999 – defended Cand. Sci. (PhD) thesis.
2013 – appointed KarRC RAS Secretary for Science, and then Deputy President.
2015 – defended Dr. Sci. (DSc) thesis.
2016 – awarded the title of RAS Corresponding Academician.

Has been acting as KarRC President Ad Interim since March 2017.
Specialist in ecology and soil science, author of 135 scientific papers including 7 monographic books.
