Obonezhje has for centuries been a zone of contacts between the Baltic-Finnic and the Slavic population, and at earlier stages in the history – the pre-Baltic-Finnic and the Baltic-Finnic groups. Settlement names of this historic-cultural region are a source portraying the ethnic/language situation, and reflect, among other things, the types of settlement in the area (reclaiming the cultural landscape).
