The fish parasite fauna in Lake Sjamozero (Karelia, Russia) has been studied during last 50 years.
In the 1970-1980s, the trophic status of the lake changed due to anthropogenic pressure. Eutrophication has led to considerable changes in the parasite fauna of coregonids (vendace Coregonus albula (L.) and whitefish Coregonus lavaretus pallasi (Val.)). Fish invasion by the parasites which life cycle involves zooplankton increased significantly. The dominant species in the parasite fauna were cestodes Proteocephalus longicollis and Diphyllobothrium dendriticum. The proportion of salmonid-associated parasites decreased. At present, metacercariae Ichthyocotylurus erraticus appear again as the dominant species, like it used to be in the 1950s. On the contrary, species connected with planktonic organisms involved in the life cycle are not prevalent in the parasite fauna.
