The paper describes characteristic features of the Republic of Karelia hydrographic network and its impact on the water economy development. The water resource potential of the region (river runoff, and waters of lakes and reservoirs) was estimated. Current utilization of the water resources and the dynamics of water consumption and water discharge in the period from 1970 to 2009 were analyzed. The main problems of sustainable use and conservation of water resources: human impact onwater bodies and high-quality drinking water supply to people, were formulated and analyzed
