Heroic models in daily life: Soviet children and the Spanish Civil War
// Interacting Francoism: Entanglement, Comparison and Transfer between Dictatorships in the 20th Century (Routledge Studies in Modern History). London, 2023. Pp. 203-223
This chapter shows how the Spanish Civil War was present in the everyday life of children in the Stalinist Soviet Union. Based on periodicals for children, including texts and visual images, the chapter focuses on how the media suggested the topic should be covered in children's educational practices and how it was perceived by children. Undoubtedly, the official angle of view on the Spanish events in the USSR was general, ageless and determined by the party line. But it is important to understand which narratives were selected for children, what were the features of representation, the specifics of the means and methods used, the explicit and hidden goals of exploiting the theme in the Soviet discourse aimed at children. Which individuals occupied the pantheon of heroes of the Civil War, how the figures of Franco and Stalin fit into the context of events. Who wrote these texts for children and how the topic penetrated their everyday life. How it was perceived by the children and what kind of response it received, that is, how Soviet children who had never been to Spain expressed their perception of events and their attitude towards them in their own work – drawings, poems and essays about Spain.
