Investigation of population structure of Picea X Fennica revel using multidimensional methods

Determining the population structure of economically valuable types of trees is one of the leading trends in the modern forest genetic. The populations of the woody species majority are characterized by weak isolation by space and boundary vagueness and this make it difficult to analyse intraspecies differentiation on the basis of separated features. In this connection an attempt was made of determination of population structure of P. x fennica in Karelia's territory applying feature complex and multidimensional statistical models. The material (cones) for the analysis was collected in 20 points situated in the territory of Karelia and adjacent regions. The generative organ traits which are of great taxonomic and philogenetic importance were chosen as phenotypic markers of population structure. The calculation of the standard characteristics of variability indicated that the means of the examined features are variable along the geographic gradient. The factor analysis showed that the major part (80 %) of the intersample variation of the traits being studied can be described by two synthetic variables (factors). The classification accomplished with the help of factor analysis pointed that the population system of spruce in Karelia is structural one. The most informative features was separated by using the discriminant analysis. The Makhalanobis distances were calculated, these being used for constructing the dendrogram of similarity of the spruce living areas. The application of the discriminant and the cluster analysis corroborated in principal the factor analysis classification. The results of multidimensional statistic analysis showed that in the territory of Karelia P.x fennica is differentiated by the morphological traits of generative organs into six populations. The hybrid spruce is characterised by the continuos population system which corresponds to the geographic and natural peculiarities of the studied areal part. The events connected with the last ice period and also natural selection are the main evolutional factors determining spruce interpopulation divergence.
