Flora of vascular plants of middle Karelia: taxonomical and typological diversity
// Biodiversity of Fennoscandia (diversity, human impact, nature conservation). Petrozavodsk: Karelian Research Centre of RAS, 1997.
The study area is situated in the middle Karelia (MK) (between 63o and 65oN) in Southern part of North taiga subzone, on the southern boundary of hypoarctic phytogeographical belt (Yurtsev, 1966). It coincide the territory of 2 phytogeographical regions: Karelia pomorica occidentalis and Karelia pomorica orientalis (Mela, Cajander, 1906) or 2 floristic regions: Topozerskii and Vygozerskii (Ramenskaya, 1983). Pine forests are predominant in the vegetation of MK. There are large bog tracts. The area is characterised by poor flora and high coenotic role of hypoarctic species.

Studies of flora of vascular plants (VF) were begun in the first part of 19th century. The most serious studies were made by Bergrot. He marked 528 species of vascular plants. VF of MK studies continue till nowadays. Last ten years investigators use the method of local flora (Yurtsev, 1982).

The list of species of vascular plant according to literature data, herbarium materials and expedition data includes 793 species belonging to the 95 families and 379 genus. 572 of aboriginal species combine into 271 genus and 87 families. Accidental fraction of VF include 221 species (28%).

Leading families (species quantitatively) are: Cyperaceae, Poaceae, Asteraceae, Caryophyllaceae, Ranunculaceae, Rosaceaea, Salicaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Juncaceae, Orchidaceae, Apiaceae, Ericaceae, Fabaceae. First 10 of them include 305 species (53%).

11 geographical elements and 5 areal types form geographical structure of the flora. The most numerous is the group of boreal species (62%), hypoarctic elements (including hypoarctoalpine and hypoarctoboreal) put together 15%, boreonemoral and plurizonal (including cosmopolitan) - 5% and 8% correspondingly, arctic and arctoalpine - 3% and 4%, nemoral - only 2%. Species with circumpolar areal type (42%) are predominate in VF of MK . Boreal euroasiatic (24.5%) and boreal circumpolar (23.2%) (according to longitudinal and latitudinal characteristics) species are predominant in VF of MK.

The most numerous life form group is the herbaceous species (87%). Tree species arrange 12% and suffrutescent only 1%.

Raunkier spectrum of life forms demonstrate the leading role of hemicryptophyte species: F8,9 + CH5,5 + HK55,3 + KR17,2 + T6,4 + HY6,7.
