"Socio-economic, spiritual and cultural revival of Karelia"

October 12-14, 2000
Petrozavodsk

The life of many renowned scholars is connected with Karelia. A vivid example is the academician Konstantin I. Arseniev (1789 - 1865).

His multi-faceted scientific activities and historical affiliation to the city of Petrozavodsk and Karelia urged us to institute a series of "K.I. Arseniev readings" workshops.

The first Arseniev readings were held in Petrozavodsk in 1995. Their organization on a regular basis will promote comprehensive development of knowledge in statistics, economics, geography, history, literature. They will provide an opportunity to direct the creative and scientific aspirations of scientists, specialists, youth towards socio-economic, spiritual and cultural revival of our Republic.

The proposed conference "Socio-economic, spiritual and cultural revival of Karelia" is in fact the first large-scale event in the Arseniev readings series, and will be a part of the activities celebrating the 300 Anniversary of Petrozavodsk.
