On May 23, Karelian Research Centre RAS hosted a session of the Office of the Inter-academy Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.

Quite a number of important issues were addressed, such as establishment of an integrated sci-tech dimension of the Union State, projects for promising basic and applied research with interactions between the academic science of Russia and Belarus (inter-regional context). CEOs of the two academies focused on collaboration between the scientific institutions of the RAS Siberian Branch and NAS of Belarus, and on the issues to be chosen for joint studies for the benefit of a balanced regional development in Russia and Belarus, as well as on interactions between scientific organizations of NAS of Belarus and the Karelian Research Centre RAS.
Particular attention at the session was given to the topics of new projects under Union State programs, including: remote sensing of the Earth for forest fire monitoring, environment-friendly fertilizers, new abrasive materials, specialized high-efficiency and environment-friendly gas engines.

Preparations for the joint session of the Presidium of NAS of Belarus and RAS Presidium in Moscow in June 2019 were discussed. The organization of scientific support to the development of the strategic lines for long-term spatial-territorial and socio-economic development of Russia and Belarus were addressed (“United Eurasia” mega-project).

The session participants included Deputy State Secretary – member of the Standing Committee of the Union State Aleksey Kubrin, RAS President Alexander Sergeev, First Deputy Chair of the Presidium of NAS of Belarus Sergey Chizhik, President of the RAS Siberian Branch Valentin Parmon, President of KarRC RAS Olga Bakhmet.
