The country's leading scientists will discuss the problems of climate change in the Arctic, issues on the environmental agenda, environmental protection laws and other topics.
On April 24-25, Karelian Research Center RAS will be a venue for federal-level events. On Thursday, April 24, the conference “Environmental Problems of Arctic Territories” will be held at KarRC RAS. The conference will be attended by the country's leading scientists: fellows and corresponding fellows of the Russian Academy of Sciences, CEOs of scientific organizations.

The main topics of the conference are Arctic geoecology, climate change in the Russian Arctic Zone (RAZ) and geoinformatics, natural and man-made hazards in the RAZ and possibilities for developing transportation systems in the RAZ in the light of geoecological, climatic, natural and man-made hazards. These issues will be covered in 15 presentations. The agenda includes talks by Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute, RAS Corresponding Fellow, Olga Bakhmet, KarRC RAS Director General, RAS Corresponding Fellow, Vladimir Semenov, Director of the RAS Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics, RAS Academician, and other prominent researchers.

On April 25, KarRC RAS will host the joint session of the RAS Scientific Council for Arctic and Antarctic Studies under the RAS Presidium and the Karelian Research Centre RAS.

The RAS Scientific Council for Arctic and Antarctic Studies is an expert and scientific advisory body under the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Its tasks are to plan and coordinate basic research on the Earth's polar regions. The Chairman of the Council Bureau is Alexey Gvishiani, RAS Academician, Professor, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Scientific Director and Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Geophysical Center RAS.

Karelian Research Center RAS is among the leading scientific organizations in the country. One of the priority research areas for Karelian scientists is the study of Arctic territories: natural ecosystems, economy and social development, languages and historical heritage. KarRC RAS Director General, Corresponding Academician Olga Bakhmet is a member of the RAS Scientific Council for Arctic and Antarctic Studies.

Karelian biologists ran successful trials of a technique for detecting fish infection with helminths based on traces of their DNA in water

Specialists of the Institute of Biology KarRC RAS were the first in the republic to test the method of environmental DNA analysis (eDNA) to detect a model fish parasite in an area impacted by trout farms. This is especially important in the context of a growing number of fish farms that use the practice of transporting stock (fry) from between water bodies, which creates a risk of new parasites appearing in lakes. Currently, fish have to be captured and examined to detect an infection, and for the output to be accurate the sample should be at least 15 fish. This may be problematic in the wild and costly in cage facilities. The eDNA diagnosis system can detect the presence of parasites directly in water samples.
