On April 24-25, Karelian Research Center RAS will be a venue for federal-level events. On Thursday, April 24, the conference “Environmental Problems of Arctic Territories” will be held at KarRC RAS. The conference will be attended by the country's leading scientists: fellows and corresponding fellows of the Russian Academy of Sciences, CEOs of scientific organizations.
The main topics of the conference are Arctic geoecology, climate change in the Russian Arctic Zone (RAZ) and geoinformatics, natural and man-made hazards in the RAZ and possibilities for developing transportation systems in the RAZ in the light of geoecological, climatic, natural and man-made hazards. These issues will be covered in 15 presentations. The agenda includes talks by Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute, RAS Corresponding Fellow, Olga Bakhmet, KarRC RAS Director General, RAS Corresponding Fellow, Vladimir Semenov, Director of the RAS Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics, RAS Academician, and other prominent researchers.
On April 25, KarRC RAS will host the joint session of the RAS Scientific Council for Arctic and Antarctic Studies under the RAS Presidium and the Karelian Research Centre RAS.
The RAS Scientific Council for Arctic and Antarctic Studies is an expert and scientific advisory body under the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Its tasks are to plan and coordinate basic research on the Earth's polar regions. The Chairman of the Council Bureau is Alexey Gvishiani, RAS Academician, Professor, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Scientific Director and Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Geophysical Center RAS.
Karelian Research Center RAS is among the leading scientific organizations in the country. One of the priority research areas for Karelian scientists is the study of Arctic territories: natural ecosystems, economy and social development, languages and historical heritage. KarRC RAS Director General, Corresponding Academician Olga Bakhmet is a member of the RAS Scientific Council for Arctic and Antarctic Studies.
– In its sessions, the Council traditionally focuses on certain topics. This time the main topic on the agenda is the environment in the Arctic zone. In addition to presentations by members of the Scientific Council, the audience will be addressed by KarRC RAS staff members with extensive experience and significant results of research on northern territories, – remarked Olga Bakhmet.

Institute of Geology KarRC RAS willing to act as a platform for comprehensive dialog between science, business, authorities
Employees of the Institute of Geology KarRC RAS took part in the 4th International Stone Processing Forum Karelforum-2025. The scientists acted as experts in professional discussions. A take-away from the discussions is that it is necessary to develop cooperation between the mining industry of the republic and the scientific community for a proficient assessment of promising sites and objects and qualified expert review reserves.

KarRC RAS Learned Council resumes work after the summer break
KarRC RAS Learned Council held its first meeting after the summer break. Scientists heard and discussed issues of relevance to the Centre. The scientific agenda was about the results of studies in hydrophysics and geology, and the administrative agenda was about the CEO change at the Forest Research Institute and "Transactions of KarRC RAS" getting a level-1 listing on the White List of scientific journals. The meeting also featured a ceremony for handing in diplomas to doctoral school graduates.
