Conference “Regional-level Cooperation Within BRICS: Modern Environmental and Nature Management Issues” continues at KarRC RAS

On its second day, the International Conference “Regional-level Cooperation Within BRICS: Modern Environmental and Nature Management Issues” at KarRC RAS works in parallel thematic sessions. Scientists discuss sustainable nature management from the perspectives of terrestrial ecosystem and water resource studies, Earth and materials sciences, and under human impact. In addition, roundtable “On the Outstanding Contribution of I.V. Gorynin to the Development of Russian and World Science” is being held within the International Academic Forum.
The Third International Conference “Regional-level Cooperation Within BRICS: Modern Environmental and Nature Management Issues”, which was launched the day before, continues its work at the KarRC RAS. Today, scientists are discussing research results in specific areas. Four thematic sessions are devoted to sustainable nature management. Experts from BRICS and CIS countries are sharing experiences of international and interregional cooperation in the study of terrestrial ecosystems, water research, Earth science and materials science, and human impact. A fifth session addresses issues of the green economy – interaction between science, businesses and authorities on the matters of sustainable territorial development. The sessions are moderated by representatives of the management of KarRC RAS institutes and scientific organizations of India, Abkhazia and China, as well as the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.


At the thematic session “Sustainable Nature Management in BRICS and CIS Countries: International and Interregional Cooperation in Water Research”

The Third International Conference “Regional-level Cooperation Within BRICS: Modern Environmental and Nature Management Issues” is integrated into the International Academic Forum dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Karelian Research Centre RAS. The architecture of the forum reflects one of the Centre’s core characteristics – the multidisciplinary nature of its research.

– One of the things that makes the Karelian Research Centre so valuable is that we can implement interdisciplinary projects involving researchers from various scientific fields. This collaboration between representatives of different fields of knowledge is effective and mutually beneficial, – noted KarRC RAS CEO Olga Bakhmet in her interview with the media.



At the thematic session “Sustainable Nature Management in BRICS and CIS: Experiences of International and Interregional Cooperation in Earth and Materials Sciences”

Another Sept. 16th event held at the KarRC RAS within the International Academic Forum is the roundtable “On the Outstanding Contribution of I.V. Gorynin to the Development of Russian and World Science, Including the Creation of Unique Structural Materials and Technologies for the Development of the Arctic”. Its participants are scientists, government officials, representatives of businesses and business support institutions.

Igor Gorynin (1926–2015) was one of the world’s leading specialists in metal science. Thanks to his developments, unique materials were created that facilitated the construction of the entire modern Russian fleet, as well as offshore gas and oil rigs. The career of this outstanding metallurgist was linked to the Prometheus Central Research Institute of Structural Materials, which is now part of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Centre. The roundtable held at the KarRC RAS fulfills the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation “On Commemorating the Memory of I.V. Gorynin and Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of his Birth”.


At sessions dealing with sustainable nature management under human impact and green economy

The conference “Regional-level Cooperation Within BRICS: Modern Environmental and Nature Management Issues” will continue tomorrow. Guests will be introduced to some natural features in Karelia studied by the KarRC RAS. One more event starting on 17 September is the 21st All-Russian Scientific Conference “The Bubrikh Readings: Interdisciplinary Research in the Humanities in Northwestern Russia” will begin. This year, the event will particularly focus on the new forms, methods and results of interdisciplinary interaction in the study of the languages, cultures and history of peoples of northwestern Russia.

Karelian scientists present the results of research into plant growth control mechanisms at a conference in Makhachkala

Scientists from the Karelian Research Centre’s Institute of Biology and Forest Research Institute – Tatyana Shibaeva, Natalia Galibina, and Irina Teslyuk – took part in the All-Russian Conference "Patterns of Distribution, Reproduction and Adaptation of Plants and Animals" held in Makhachkala within the annual meeting of the Russian Society of Plant Physiologists. The researchers presented the results of studies on the mechanisms of regulation and control of plant growth, including agricultural crops and woody species.

Five KarRC RAS doctoral students granted scholarships

Five doctoral students at the Karelian Research Centre RAS will be receiving scholarships for a year. This decision was taken by the Head of the Republic of Karelia, Artur Parfenchikov, in accordance with the Law of the Republic of Karelia "On Scholarships of the Republic of Karelia for Students Enrolled in Major Professional Educational Programs", Such scholarships are awarded to undergraduate and graduate students, medical residents, and assistant trainees enrolled in higher education programs at the KarRC RAS, Petrozavodsk State University, Petrozavodsk State Conservatory, and a number of other educational institutions.
