Five KarRC RAS doctoral students granted scholarships

Five doctoral students at the Karelian Research Centre RAS will be receiving scholarships for a year. This decision was taken by the Head of the Republic of Karelia, Artur Parfenchikov, in accordance with the Law of the Republic of Karelia "On Scholarships of the Republic of Karelia for Students Enrolled in Major Professional Educational Programs", Such scholarships are awarded to undergraduate and graduate students, medical residents, and assistant trainees enrolled in higher education programs at the KarRC RAS, Petrozavodsk State University, Petrozavodsk State Conservatory, and a number of other educational institutions.
On September 11, 2026, the Head of the Republic of Karelia, Artur Parfenchikov, signed an ordinance naming the undergraduate and graduate students who will be receiving scholarships over the course of a year, with doctoral students of the Karelian Research Centre among them.

Supporting the best students is a long-standing practice in Karelia – such a scholarship was awarded for the first time back in 1996. Over the years, the law establishing the rules for awarding scholarships was been amended and supplemented a few times. For instance, in 2025, the provision that said the scholarship could only be awarded once over the entire period of study was removed from the law. This means the scholarship can now be received repeatedly if achievements are maintained.

The scholarship is awarded to graduate and undergraduate students, medical residents, or assistant trainees who have demonstrated remarkable achievements in their research, technical creativity, socially significant and public activities, as well as in sports, and is paid monthly for a year, starting from September.

Olga Koshman, Head of the Doctoral Studies Department, recounted that this May, as usual, the Karelian Ministry of Education and Sports sent a letter to the Karelian Research Centre proposing to nominate candidates for the scholarship among the Centre's doctoral students. Since the school was at that time training 59 doctoral students and only five were to be selected, the nomination decision was a tough one. All scientific subdivisions of the KarRC RAS worked together to select truly the most worthy candidates, who have been more successful in research and studies, including those who had passed their candidate exams with distinction. As a result, after reviewing the candidates proposed by the subdivisions and supported by the Doctoral Studies Department, the Karelian Research Centre’s Academic Council, at its meeting on July 8, 2026, decided on the five candidates to be nominated for the scholarships:

Daniil Atorin

Daniil Atorin (major 1.5.5. Human and Animal Physiology – affiliated with the Institute of Biology),

Ksenia Gudkova

Ksenia Gudkova (major 4.1.6. Silvics, Silviculture, Forest Crops, Agroforestry Melioration, Landscaping, Forest Fire Studies, and Valuation Inventories – affiliated with the Forest Research Institute),

Vladislav Igolkin

Vladislav Igolkin (major 1.2.2. Mathematical Modeling, Numerical Methods, and Software Suites – affiliated with the Institute of Applied Mathematical Research),

Polina Sinitskaya

Polina Sinitskaya (major 5.9.5. Russian Language. Languages of the Peoples of Russia – affiliated with the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History).

– What matters is not only the scholarship as such, however welcome for young people who are often just beginning their professional careers and have a very modest income, but it is also the prestige that comes with the very fact of a doctoral student being listed among the scholarship recipients of the Republic of Karelia, – commented Olga Koshman, Head of the Doctoral Studies Department.

We congratulate our doctoral students and wish them success in their research endeavors!
