Speaking at a meeting the KarRC RAS Academic Council on October 26, Anna Rettieva, Director of the Institute of Applied Mathematical Research, announced that the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia had issued Order No. 910/nk on the conferral of Candidate of Sciences diplomas. The list of recipients includes Sergey Astafiev and Alexander Golovin, Junior Researchers at the Laboratory for Stochastic ICT Modeling of the IAMR KarRC RAS.
The scientists defended their Cand.Sci. dissertations in June 2026. These were the first two vivas under the new Dissertation Council #24.1.517.01 set up at the KarRC RAS this year. The Order of the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education on awarding diplomas confirmed that the Council's launch has been successful.
As the Institute has communicated previously, both dissertations deal with non-classical queueing system models used in research on supercomputers and data centers. The academic supervisor of both candidates was Alexander Rumyantsev, Head of Stochastic ICT Modeling Laboratory at the IAMR KarRC RAS.
The dissertation of Sergey Astafiev was titled "Stability Analysis and Regenerative Estimation of the Systems with Multi-Server Customers Using Exponential Splitting". The researcher explored the pressing problem of constructing reliable estimates for key system performance characteristics, including in prelimit systems. Such estimates can be used in calculating cumulative energy consumption values, which is crucial, e.g., for computing the "cost of response" of a neural network when the computation is performed on a supercomputer.
Alexander Golovin’s "Probabilistic Analysis of Heterogeneous Multi-Server Queueing Systems Using Exact Sampling Methods" addresses the problem of exact estimation of stationary characteristics, such as response time, of heterogeneous systems with multi-resource requests, including hybrid supercomputers which, in addition to traditional processors, incorporate general-purpose graphics processing units (GPUs) or quantum coprocessors.
We congratulate Sergey Astafiev and Alexander Golovin on obtaining their academic degrees and wish them great achievements in science! We also wish the Dissertation Council a successful continuation!

Ethnologists of KarRC RAS release a popular-science book on the burial culture of Karelia
The book "Funeral Rites in Karelia" has been released by the well-known Russian publishing house MIF. Its authors are researchers from the Ethnology Section of the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History KarRC RAS, Alexei Konkka and Sergey Minvaleev. In this popular-science book, the Karelian scientists tell in simple language about the funeral ritualism – one of the spheres of traditional culture most resistant to change. The ethnologists have summarized archival and contemporary research on unique rituals and the Karelians' ideas about the world of the dead, and have also compared the funeral and memorial customs of different peoples and ethnic groups.

Issue No. 9 of the journal Transaction of KarRC RAS, Limnology and Oceanology Series, is out of press
This year’s ninth issue of the journal Transactions of the Karelian Research Centre RAS, Limnology and Oceanology Series, has been released. It contains 13 articles structured into three sections: Hydrophysics & Hydrology; Hydrochemistry & Sediments; and Hydrobiology. They cover topics such as equilibrium density profiles and thermocline depth in lakes during the summer stratification, seasonal and spatial variability of water temperature and turbidity in a deep dimictic lake, features of the thermal and ice regimes of Lake Onego bays, sulfate reduction process in sediments of hydrographically connected boreal lakes Verkhneye and Nizhneye in the Arkhangelsk Region, and others.
