The book is the proceedings of the international workshop «Fungi and Beetles in Historic Timber Structures in Northern Europe» held in Petrozavodsk on May 29th - June 1st, 2012. The participants were researchers and museum staff from Estonia, Russia, Latvia, Germany, Japan and the Netherlands.
The workshop was organized within the framework of the EU Interreg IVA project «Fungi and beetles in buildings on islands of the Baltic Sea» with the support of the Forest Research Institute of the Karelian Research Centre, Russian Academy of Sciences, Kizhi state open-air museum of history, architecture and ethnography and infotainment of the Ministry of Culture, Republic of Karelia.
The speakers covered a wide spectrum of themes topical for preservation of this unique stratum of the world cultural heritage - historic timber structures - including biodeterioration, species composition of wood-destroying fungi and insects. Special attention was paid to early detection of damages by monitoring methods and non-destructive techniques, as well as to environment friendly approaches to their elimination. Changes in wood due to ageing were also considered.
The participants got acquainted with the condition of main architectural monuments in southern Karelia at field workshops.
The proceedings are of use for researchers, students as well as for the staff of open-air museums and all specialists dealing with investigation, conservation and restoration of wooden cultural heritage.
