Keywords: Ladoga burial mounds, woolen, linen fabrics, silk textiles, embroidery, gold threads, textile structure and genesis
Textiles from the 10th–12th century Ladoga burial mounds appear as fragments of tabby, twill, and broken twill woolen items. Woolen textiles feature coarse fabrics of slub threads, and thin domestic weaving broadcloth with traces of brushing. Although somewhat similar to textiles from concurrent sites of the Northwestern region and Volga-Oka interfluve, they generally evidence a unique weaving quality. Silk fabrics, goldwork bands and gold-embroidered items indicating the high standing of the deceased were apparently delivered to Priladozhje from Middle Asia owing to active trade contacts. The structure of the fabrics and the characteristics of the fibres used in the textiles were determined by optical microscopy; the composition and amounts of metals in the gold threads were determined by electron probe microanalysis.
