Photosynthesis and parameters of water regime (predawn and midday water potential of roots and shoots) of the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and soils were studied in wet blueberry-pine forest in European part of the middle taiga domain (South Karelia) during a long period. Soil water potential was high during the whole period of study, which points to well water supply of soils. On the other hand we found deficit in water exchange of pines affecting the dynamics of photosynthesis. Here we show that timing and value of maximal photosynthesis of pines is controlled by the water deficit in shoots. Contribution of air temperature and luminance to photosynthetic regulation under water deficit was evaluated, and the mechanisms discussed.
