Cyanobacteria blooming in lakes of the Republic of Karelia under climate change and human impact // Transactions of Karelian Research Centre of Russian Academy of Science. No 9. An analysis of long-term (1950–2025) observations of meteorological conditions, temperature and water level regimes, and phytoplankton status in lakes Vedlozero and Kroshnozero (southern part of the Republic of Karelia) revealed patterns in the eutrophication of these lakes under climate warming. It was shown that in the 2020s, the lakes have experienced a rise in cyanobacteria blooming, including species capable of releasing toxic metabolic products. A complex set of causes for this phenomenon was identified, the main ones being high nutrient load and a significant rise in water temperature due to regional climate warming. Water level lowering in summer results in higher water temperatures and nutrient concentrations, accelerating algal metabolism and provoking their active growth. This phenomenon is becoming regular in the context of eutrophication of lakes in the southern part of Karelia.
