The paper presents the history of the Institute of Geology of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, starting from its inception in 1946, when the Geology Section was established within the Karelian-Finnish Research Facility of the USSR Academy of Sciences, to the present day. Key milestones in the Institute's evolution are highlighted, including structural reorganizations, shifts in research priorities, and the expansion of international cooperation. A chapter is dedicated to the most significant events of the period 1961–2021, and a separate section covers the recent history, from 2022 onwards, during which the Institute has been actively advancing its scientific outreach and public engagement activities. The major outcomes of basic and applied research conducted over the 65-year period are presented in a nutshell, with reference to published works – from studies of Precambrian complexes to the development of integrated technologies for mineral raw material processing. Special attention is given to the long-standing collaboration with the Petrozavodsk State University, which has provided the Institute with qualified personnel and continues to play a vital role in training young specialists. Since the Institute's activities are inseparable from the contributions of its employees, a substantial part of the publication is devoted to the researcher community – from the founding veterans to the current generation of researchers who carry forward the traditions of the Karelian geological school. This underscores the central message: the history of the Institute is made by its people, and today that history continues to unfold on a new turn of the century.
