The effect of different pH values on the germinating energy (germination power) and germinating capacity of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seeds of different geographical provenance was studied. Scots pine seeds originating from different locations differ in the germinating energy. The two maxima of the index correlated with areas low and neutral pH values. This fact can explain the spread of Scots pine in a wide range of soil acidity values, and suggests that soil pH is a factor contributing to the formation of Scots pine ecotypes in North-west Russia.
