A brief historical review of the modal analysis of rocks under the microscope is given in the paper. It is emphasized that the mathematical background of the method is not exhausted up to now despite the fact that it is highly computerized. The references to the Cavalieri principle are shown to be incorrect and shade the problem. It is concluded that the higher precision of the method needs the stereological analysis to be developed.
