The importance of tidal mixing and transfer is discussed in relation to the distribution of substance in a shallow Kemi estuary (the White Sea). Results of hydrophysical investigations in Kemi estuary are presented. Calculation of tidal currents, sea-level fluctuations and distribution of substance are realized using simulation program CARDINAL. It is shown that the residual tidal circulation in Kemi estuary is rather weak.
