The tourism development as not just one of the economical sectors in the regional economy but as a part of the complete and complicated economical complex demands a systematical and complex approach to its planning and development. Besides the direct impact on the regional economy through the employment, enterprise development and budget effect, tourism brings an additional impact on the related sectors. Introducing the tourism into the regional strategic planning system becomes an important instrument. The article is dedicated to the issues of complex tourism development in the region, its role in the regional social-economical development and main methodological approaches by example of Karelia.
