The paper looks at how the gendarme figure was perceived by gendarmes themselves early in the 20th century. Two distinct types of officers can be clearly distinguished from the memoir literature: zealous gimpers and timeservers. The author attempts to disclose the causes of such attitudes toward the service and formation of the character types.
