The article describes the folklore origins of Mordovian comedy, analyzes the evolution of comedy in connection with the changes taking place in all spheres of life in the 1920s, and traces the development of comedic genres, their national and artistic specifics. The author describes the position of comedy in contemporary Mordovian literature, its genre peculiarities, the nature of conflict, and special features of comic characters.
