Experience of making a complex description of a region's coverage by studies and ecological problems in a Data Base System
// Biodiversity of Fennoscandia (diversity, human impact, nature conservation). Petrozavodsk: Karelian Research Centre of RAS, 1997.
The aim of the work is to create technology, which ensures completeness, minimumness and consistency of reflection in the distributed database system of the state of study and problems of ecology. The solution of the first stage of this task is systematization of ecological conceptions and construction of the dictionary of terms and names and rubricators. Rubricators must outline the limits of the problem domain and ensure placing of the information in databases and following searching for data. The dictionary is intended for unification of the domain vocabulary, solution of the problems of synonymy and polysemy. Two alternative rubricators have been developed: the first is based on the spheres of V.I.Vernadsky and the objects of scientific branches, the second is based on the geographical objects typology. There are three levels in the dictionary: object relations, variable names and variable meanings. The information about ecosystems is represented in tables, their lexical shape is provided by the dictionary of terms and names. The system developed can operate in a local network in the "client-server" mode or in the "working group" mode in a one-level network. Every network user can work coth with the system data bases and personal (private) ones. Registration on data bases and their location are made in the catalogue. Tasks are formulated in the interactive mode. Functions of protection from unauthorized access, data base utilization statistics, cleaning out "garbage", i.e. the files with disturbed integrity limits are implemented. Data manipulation can result in the combinations of data bases which reflect any actual or hypothetical links between ecosystem components. These DBs can be exported to be processed by the application programmes available.
