The present-day status of the lake trout populations in waters of Karelia was analysed and potential conservation solutions for this regionally red-listed species were suggested. A crucial measure for the preservation and enhancement of the lake trout populations is artificial propagation, e.g. using trout from Olanga (Lake Pjaozero catchment) as the initial material. Simultaneously, a stricter fish protection regime should be introduced on the Topo-Pjaozerskoye impoundment reservoir, where the Olanga trout population feeds, and where it has lately been obviously overharvested. Another expedient measure would be to designate fish reserves on some trout spawning rivers of Karelia (e.g., on rivers Karmanga and Tavanga in the Pjaozero lake catchment; on River Valaz in the Topozero lake catchment); and possibly on some rivers of the Onego and Ladoga catchments, as well.
