A description of the present status of populations of 12 diurnal raptor species listed in the national and regional Red Data Books and breeding in Karelia is provided, including data on their distribution and abundance. Maps of distribution of rare raptors in Karelia and adjacent areas are supplied. The situation is the most strenuous for the Spotted Eagle, Peregrine Falcon and Golden Eagle (8, 10 and 36 pairs). The Shorttoed Eagle and Red-footed Falcon in the region are at the limit of the distribution ranges; the Pallid Harrier is an accidental breeder in Karelia. The populations of the rest of raptors are either relatively stable or increasing
in the long term (White-tailed Sea Eagle, Osprey and partly Merlin).
