The paper gives an overview of the Baltic Sea and its catchment, considers the main industrial sectors of different countries within the region, describes major environmental problems induced by the influx of nutrients, heavy metals and oil to the sea. The history of international cooperation on the Baltic Sea Region environmental problems is presented. The conclusion is drawn that environmental education is a primary way towards wide involvement in the Baltic Sea pollution problems and, hence, a promising mechanism for resolving them.
