Keywords: atmospheric precipitation, surface waters, chemical composition of natural water.
The role of atmospheric precipitation in the formation of the chemical composition of Karelian surface waters is considered by two methodological approaches. The contribution of the atmospheric constituent to the chemical balance of surface waters was estimated using long-term data of the chemical composition of precipitation taking into account the composition of surface waters and specific chemical carry-over of substances from the catchment area. We found that the input of mineral and organic substances with atmospheric precipitation on land is insignificant. Precipitation is a source of nutrients, especially ammonium, nitrate, mineral and total phosphorus and heavy metals.
