We investigated the effect of the nematode Toxascaris leonina on the body weight and pelt quality of Arctic foxes. When the infective dose was 10 and 100 T. leonina eggs the average weight of the animals in the treatments and the control did not differ significantly. Increase of the infective dose to 1 000 eggs upsets the existing relationships and shifts the balance in the host-parasite system to the detriment of the host. Loss in the body weight tells negatively on the skin dimensions, quality, and commercial value. Our conclusion is that the host=parasite system of Alopex lagopus – T. leonina in cage rearing of Arctic foxes has an extensive adaptation potential.
