Major research trends

By now two scientific trends have been developed in the laboratory:

  • computer-aided design of transport and energy systems;
  • creation of simulation systems for power plants and the study of renewable energy resources spacial-temporal distribution in Karelia;
  • study of hydrogen interaction with solids.

  • Many-year studies on the first trend resulted in the elaboration of the basics for decision-making optimization in the design of woodtransportation networks, logging automobile roads in longitudinal section and forest amelioration canals, which is based upon the methods of mathematical modelling, discrete and multiparameter methods of optimization. A monograph "Methods of computer-aided design of wood transport" (G.A. Borisov, 1978) was published using the research materials. The fundamentals of the theory of design choices optimization were used in 3 generations of specialized CAD for wood transportation networks, logging automobile roads in longitudinal section and forest amelioration objects, which are now of common use in the country's project planning organizations.

    The second research trend has been developed actively in the last years. Up-to-date assessments of renewable energy sources in Karelia were obtained, which allowed to elaborate a diversification concept of the fuel-energy complex development in the republic.

    The third research trend has been developed also recently. The problems of estimation of parameters of hydrogen interaction with solids are considered. In connection with the problems of storage and transport the interest to kinetic parameter estimation of metal dehydrating has risen. The problems of ecologically safe energy, chemical engineering, transport, metal protection of hydrogen corrosion, hydrocarbon raw storage and transport, etc. makes the subject topical. Besides the diffusion processes physical and chemical sorption/desorption surface processes are taken into consideration, which leads to considering non-classical dynamical boundary conditions. While estimating the kinetic parameters of hydrogen permeability of protection coverings the processes on the joints of layers (of different materials) should be modelled, which results in additional joint conditions. The change of phaze (dehydrating) leads to the moving phase border (with the appropriate Stefan type conditions).
