On May 17, 2017 KarRC RAS was visited by ad interim Head of the Republic of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov. He met with the Centre’s SEOs and leading scientists, paid visits to institutes of Geology, Biology, Forest Research, and Linguistics, Literature and History. A roundtable discussion was organized during the visit, dealing with the prospects of using KarRC RAS’s scientific developments for the benefit of the socio-economic development of the Republic of Karelia.

Russian Academy of Sciences and Nauka Publishers have resolved to open free access to the archives of RAS journals, including 2017 issues, published by Nauka Publishers under contract with RAS. Free access to electronic versions of RAS journals will be provided through Elibrary.ru and Libnauka.ru (Nauka Publishers digital library).

The Ladoga Skerries National Park with a total of 122 000 ha on the northern and north-western coast of Lake Ladoga was established by the Russian Federation Government Ordinance #1684 of December 28, 2017.

The process of establishment of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the status of a Federal Research Centre (FRC) is completed. This new scientific formation is the result of amalgamating 7 academic institutes and the Karelian Research Centre RAS into an entity. The priority tasks for the FRC KarRC RAS is to promote new interdisciplinary areas of science, upgrade the facilities and resources of the institutes, optimize the administrative and economic operations.
