On October 12, 2017 the Working Group on Nature Conservation operating under the Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of Finland on environmental cooperation had a meeting at the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.
The meeting particularly focused on the interactions between federal- and regional-subordination protected areas (PAs) in the framework of the international project Green Belt of Fennoscandia.

Participants on the Russian side included the delegation of the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment with representatives of the Leningrad Region Committee on Natural Resources, Murmansk Region Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Leningrad Region PA Directorate, Republic of Karelia Ministry of Nature Use and Environment, Kostomukshsky Strict Nature Reserve, Karelian Research Centre RAS. The Finnish delegation includes representatives of the Ministry of the Environment of Finland, Finnish Forest Administration, Finnish Environment Institute, research institutions.

KarRC RAS was represented at the meeting by its Acting President Olga Bakhmet.

The international conference International and Interregional Connectivity of Protected Areas in the European North took place at the Karelian Research Centre RAS on November 1317, 2017. The conference gathered over 150 participants representing scientific organizations, national and regional authorities, public and non-governmental nature conservation organizations from Russia, Finland and Norway. The conference was held within the framework of the National Year of Ecology in Russia, and was co-funded by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, Ministry of Nature Use and Environment of the Republic of Karelia and WWF Russia Barents Office.

On November 9-10, 2017 events of the 9th Youth Economic Forum took place at the premises of the Forum organizers Institute of Economics KarRC RAS, Petrozavodsk State University, Karelian Branch of the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration. The participants of the Forum were early-career scientists, graduate and post-graduate students, senior schoolchildren, experts and entrepreneurs from 8 countries: Russia, Finland, the USA, Germany, Japan, Poland, Zambia, Estonia. Altogether around 1000 participants attended the platforms of the Forum, including educational institutions.
