Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences is turning 75. On January 31, 1946, the document was signed about founding the Karelian-Finnish Research Facility of the USSR Academy of Sciences. This event affirmed the definitive resolution that there will be academic science in Karelia!
Since 1930, when the Karelian Research (Integrated) Institute was founded, institutionalized science in Karelia has developed through multiple ups and downs, transformations, and name changes (see Wikipedia article about KarRC RAS).
In 2017, Karelian Research Centre received the status of a Federal Research Centre.

As of now, Karelian Research Centre RAS comprises seven institutes (of Biology; Northern Water Problems; Geology; Forest Research; Applied Mathematical Research; Economics; Linguistics, Literature and History) and the Department for Multidisciplinary Scientific Research.

The range of scientific areas explored by KarRC RAS staff is nearly pervasive – from continental drift to issues in the probability theory.

The results from the basic research carried out at KarRC RAS form the foundation for many applied developments. Our scientists implement the ecological monitoring of water resources and biodiversity in Northwest Russia, prepare feasibility studies for protected areas. KarRC RAS has been re-elected at the international level to be the coordinator for the Green Belt of Fennoscandia.

Staff of the institutes work out techniques for the conservation and reproduction of biological resources, namely curly birch and salmonid fish, develop methods for the restoration and sustainable management of the republic’s forests, carry out prospecting and explorations for mineral raw materials, study the regional economy, prepare management strategies for the region, solve problems in contemporary mathematical science. Last but not least, preservation of the indigenous ethnic and cultural heritage of Karelia is on the radar.

– There is no future without the past, and Karelian Research Centre’s history proves this. Having gone through a long series of reorganizations, some of them being de facto liquidations, we continue persistently working for the benefit of Russian science and achieving world-standard results. The anniversary year for KarRC happened to concur with the Russian National Year of Science and Technology, and we believe this event will signify a new stage in our Centre’s activities, - remarked KarRC RAS President Olga Bakhmet.

The official events celebrating KarRC RAS 75th anniversary start on February 8, on the Science Day, with a ceremonial meeting of the Learned Council.
