The awards ceremony of the 23rd Republic of Karelia Book of the Year 2022 contest took place at the RK National Library on May 2. This year, 104 applications were submitted, and 50 titles competed for the Book of the Year title.

The expert jury awarded the Book of the Year title and token to the book «Peter – the Famous Tsar = Pedri - kuulužu kuningas: Karelian folklore text about Peter the Great», edition of Periodika Publishers. The volume compiler, author of the introduction, translation, and notes is Valentina Mironova, Senior Researcher at the Folklore and Literature Studies Section of the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History KarRC RAS.

The volume includes folklore pieces about Peter the Great recorded from Karelian-speaking population during the second half of the 19th - first half of the 20th century. Historical runo songs about the capture of Vyborg, folktales and traditions were retrieved from various printed sources, as well as from the handwritten folklore collection stored at KarRC RAS. The texts are in three Karelian supradialects, with Russian translations. The volume was prepared as a part of the celebration agenda of the 350th anniversary of Peter the Great's birth.

The volume has also become a winner in the categories Karelia=Karjala, Class Book, To Read and Re-read.

The winner in the Light of Science category is the collective monograph «Lithospheric Structure and Dynamics of the White Sea Region», released by the KarRC RAS Editorial and Publishing Department. The Editor-in-charge is Dr. of Geology and Mineralogy Nikolai Sharov.

The monograph reviews the current concepts of the deep crustal structure of the White Sea and adjacent areas. The review is based on the analysis of the entire available pool of geological and geophysical information from the last 50 years. It is believed that the structure of the Precambrian blocks of the region's continental crust formed in the White Sea region in the Archean period has been preserved up to now. The authors focus their attention on the results of instrumental seismological monitoring, seismicity-generating phenomena and processes, and other manifestations of modern geodynamics.

Another book acknowledged at the contest was prepared at the Institute of Geology KarRC RAS. The authors of the popular-science comic book «Educative travels of Karelian animals» (text by IG KarRC RAS Director Sergey Svetov, illustrations by artist Anna Danilova) received a diploma under the “Class Book” category.

The «Educative travels of Karelian animals» is a comic book about the geology of our republic. Its characters are four baby animals travelling to well-known destinations: Mount Vottovaara, Girvas paleovolcano, Chyortov Stool locality, and others. The idea to create a book for children appeared at the Institute after publication of a popular science guidebook "Geological Heritage of Karelia".

A special diploma from the Book Lovers Society was awarded to Elena Soini, Leading Researcher at the Folklore and Literature Studies Section ILLH KarRC RAS for her book «Roerich: Hieroglyphs of Northern Life».

The monograph is the first book to explore the life and work of the famous Russian painter N.K. Roerich (1874-1947) in the context of the historical events that took place in Sortavala in 1918. The question is raised about the mission of art in an extreme political situation and about the relationships between people of culture from different countries in the most trying periods in history. Documents from Russian and foreign public and private archives are analyzed and brought into scientific circulation, significantly supplementing our knowledge about the artist's life in Karelia.

Congratulations to the winners and laureates of the Republic of Karelia's Book of the Year 2022 contest! Thank you for the wonderful books and may you enjoy inexhaustible sources of creativity and interested readers!
