The scientific youth school and conference dedicated to the memory of outstanding scientists Kauko Kratz and Felix Mitrofanov started in Petrozavodsk on October 1st. The event has been held since 1985 at geological institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences in three cities: St. Petersburg, Petrozavodsk and Apatity. Every year researchers gather to discuss topics in geology, petrology, geochronology, mineralogy, crystallography, geophysics, geochronology and other fields.
— Today we commemorate the scientists who have contributed greatly not only to the study of the geology of Northwest Russia, but also to the training of young scientists. Kauko Ottovich Kratz studied the Precambrian geology of our region. The scientist has always cared for young researchers, and a whole pleiad of geologists is associated with his name. Felix Petrovich Mitrofanov also paid great attention to working with the youth, he brought up a generation of talented young researchers in Apatity, the discovery of most platinum deposits on the Kola Peninsula is connected with his name, - said Sergey Svetov, Director of the KarRC RAS Institute of Geology, in his opening speech.
Over the years, the conference has become a platform for discussion and a scientific school for young scientists not only in the North-West, but also in other regions of Russia. This year Petrozavodsk welcomes geologists from St. Petersburg, Apatity, Tomsk, Voronezh, and Moscow.
The conference includes a plenary session with geology lectures by Russian scientists and eight thematic sections, including Mineral Resources and Metallogeny, Lithology and Paleontology, Geoecology of the Northern and Arctic Zone, and others. The first day was devoted to a workshop on preparing academic articles: authors, editors and reviewers of leading Russian and foreign journals spoke about how to successfully publish one's research results.
The program will be concluded with a field trip to geological research sites in Karelia. The guests will be introduced to the Paleoproterozoic Onega volcanogenic-sedimentary structure complex, visiting the vicinity of Belaya Gora and Girvas settlements in the Kondopoga District and Shuyskaya Station in the Prionezhsky District of Karelia.

Ligula tapeworm manipulates the physiology and behavior of the infected fish host by means of an array of proteins
Biochemists at the KarRC RAS have elucidated how a widespread parasite – ligula tapeworm – affects the physiology and behavior of cyprinid fishes, particularly bream. The scientists conducted a proteomic analysis of swabs from the parasite-host contact zone to trace their molecular-level interactions. It turns out, Ligula can use a set of proteins to not only suppress the host's immune system and regulate nutrient availability but also to reduce the fish's vigilance, making it easier prey for birds – the definitive hosts in the tapeworm's life cycle.

Founded in September 1976, this department is in charge of protecting the intellectual property of the KarRC RAS. They process patent applications for inventions and utility models, as well as applications for state registration certificates for databases and computer programs. We extend our congratulations to our colleagues on this jubilee!

Geophysicists from the KarRC RAS search for historical burials in Pechenga using GPR
Employees of the Institute of Geology of the Karelian Research Centre RAS are participating in archaeological exploration on the territory of the Trifon of Pechenga Holy Trinity Male Monastery and the Church of 116 Monk Martyrs of Pechenga in the Murmansk Region. Geophysicists are conducting ground-penetrating radar surveys to locate burials and other archaeological features that will help reconstruct the area’s historical background. In August, the researchers performed a detailed GPR survey over an area of more than 7 hectares and tested a new methodology.

Experts from Russian regions, India, China, South Africa, Ethiopia, Brazil, and other countries will gather in Petrozavodsk for the conference "Regional-level Cooperation Within BRICS: Modern Environmental and Nature Management Issues" to be held at the Karelian Research Centre RAS on September 15–17. Scientists will discuss the state of aquatic and forest ecosystems, geology- and soil science perspectives of sustainable use of natural resources, as well as green economy challenges.
