April is a special month for all those engaged in geology. The first Sunday of April every year is celebrated as the Geologist's Day. On top of doing fundamental and applied research, the results of which are published in reputable international journals, the Institute of Geology KarRC RAS actively promotes science communication.

This year, the institute continued its collaboration with the National Library of the Republic of Karelia, which will host The Geological April series of public lectures. They take place Mondays till the end of the month. The first researcher to give a lecture was Sergey Svetov, Director of the Institute of Geology KarRC RAS. He characterized well-known natural features around Petrozavodsk – in Solomennoye, Chyortov Stool, and Yalgora – from a geologist's perspective. Those who missed the lecture or wish to learn more about the republic’s geology can take the guidebook titled "The Geological Heritage of Karelia," published by scientists of the KarRC RAS in 2021.



Educational meetings are scheduled for April 13, 20, and 27

The lecture on April 20 will be given by Natalia Nesterova, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Geology KarRC RAS, and will be titled "Time in Stone: The Geological History of the Earth and Karelia." The audience will learn about the origin and key stages of our planet's formation. The researcher will explain how scientists determine the age of the Earth, geological processes, rocks, and minerals, as well as what substance is the most ancient on Earth and in Karelia.

On April 27 at 6:00 PM, Oleg Maksimov, Deputy Director of the Institute of Geology KarRC RAS, invites guests on a "Journey to the Center of the Earth." The guests will learn about the discoveries and methods for studying the Earth's interior, allowing us to take a glimpse of the planet's deepest reaches.
