Logging affects the wild forest reindeer population in Karelia
Having analyzed the movements of wild reindeer in Karelia zoologists found that the animals’ preferred habitats are forests, as well as wetlands and lake shores. Clearcut areas, on the other hand, tend to be avoided due to high risk of getting killed by predators and lack of food. However, the availability of habitats suitable for this red-listed species in the republic is decreasing because of intensive forestry. To preserve the valuable habitats it is necessary to establish new protected areas or protective forest areas.
