Russian Science Foundation announced the results of the grant competition for small separate research teams. Funding is allocated for basic and exploratory research in 2024 - 2025 in all fields of knowledge. The size of one RNF grant is up to 1.5 million RUB annually.
The main objectives of the competition are to promote topics new to the research teams and to build research teams. The team size (project leader included) should be 2 to 4 persons.
Projects by researchers from the Karelian Research Centre RAS supported within the 2023 Russian Science Foundation grant competition in the priority area “Implementation of basic research and exploratory research by separate small research teams” are:

They deal with the development of domestic and international inbound tourism in the Russian Arctic, studies on the formation of wild forest reindeer population structure, identification of patterns in the formation of soil nematode communities upon plant invasions, and investigation of cestode invasion in cyprinids.

Genetic study of wolves taken down by hunters in Karelia shows hybrids from crossing between wild animals and dogs are appearing in the population. Scientists believe this may be driven by the hunting pressure – a survival strategy for the species. On the other hand, hybridization and inbreeding – crossings between close relatives – jeopardize the population in general. Meanwhile, wolves play a pivotal ecological role.
