Yulia Novikova, Doctoral Student and Junior Researcher at the Laboratory of Geography and Hydrology of the Northern Water Problems Institute (NWPI) of the Karelian Research Center RAS, was awarded a scholarship of the President of the Russian Federation for doctoral students and associates.
Yulia Novikova graduated from St. Petersburg State University with a degree in Oceanology. She is now a doctoral student at KarRC RAS, doing her dissertation research on “Water mass mixing in lakes of different types in the annual cycle” under the supervision of Galina Zdorovennova, Leading Researcher at the Hydrophysics Laboratory NWPI KarRC RAS.
— There is a worldwide trend towards climate change. Lakes are responding quickly to this factor. It is known that climate warming leads to changes in water level, thermal and gas regimes of water bodies. At the same time, the mixing of water masses remains poorly studied. The functioning of aquatic ecosystems depends on the mixing regime. It is important for us to estimate the share of external energy that is used for water mixing, — told Yulia Novikova.
In total, more than 4.5 thousand doctoral students and associates from all over Russia took part in the competition for the new Presidential Scholarship. Experts identified 500 winners, who conduct scientific research in line with the priorities of scientific and technological development of the Russian Federation.

International Academic Forum hosted by the KarRC RAS to incorporate several large conferences on natural sciences and the humanities
This fall’s main scientific event at the KarRC RAS will be the International Academic Forum "Science Beyond Borders: Interdisciplinary Scientific Cooperation". It will combine large conferences in natural sciences and the humanities within the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Karelian Research Centre RAS. The participants will be experts from across Russia and from abroad: India, China, South Africa, Ethiopia, Brazil, and other countries.

Ligula tapeworm manipulates the physiology and behavior of the infected fish host by means of an array of proteins
Biochemists at the KarRC RAS have elucidated how a widespread parasite – ligula tapeworm – affects the physiology and behavior of cyprinid fishes, particularly bream. The scientists conducted a proteomic analysis of swabs from the parasite-host contact zone to trace their molecular-level interactions. It turns out, Ligula can use a set of proteins to not only suppress the host's immune system and regulate nutrient availability but also to reduce the fish's vigilance, making it easier prey for birds – the definitive hosts in the tapeworm's life cycle.

Patent Service of the Karelian Research Centre of the RAS celebrates 50th anniversary. Founded in September 1976, this department is in charge of protecting the intellectual property of the KarRC RAS. They process patent applications for inventions and utility models, as well as applications for state registration certificates for databases and computer programs. We extend our congratulations to our colleagues on this jubilee!

Geophysicists from the KarRC RAS search for historical burials in Pechenga using GPR
Employees of the Institute of Geology of the Karelian Research Centre RAS are participating in archaeological exploration on the territory of the Trifon of Pechenga Holy Trinity Male Monastery and the Church of 116 Monk Martyrs of Pechenga in the Murmansk Region. Geophysicists are conducting ground-penetrating radar surveys to locate burials and other archaeological features that will help reconstruct the area’s historical background. In August, the researchers performed a detailed GPR survey over an area of more than 7 hectares and tested a new methodology.

Scientists will discuss the state of aquatic and forest ecosystems, geology- and soil science perspectives of sustainable use of natural resources, as well as green economy challenges.
