Ornithologists invite volunteers to join bird population monitoring

Participants in bird population monitoring in Karelia are entering the high season. The last ten days of May through early June is the nesting period for birds, during which annual observations must be carried out. Anyone is welcome to join. To participate, you need to choose a route about two km long, walk it twice or thrice, recording all birds you see or hear on the way. There are paper or electronic keys to species to help with identification.

Young biologist from KarRC RAS, who studies mechanisms of adaptation to living in the North in pink salmon, awarded national presidential scholarship

Diana Manoilova, Research Engineer at the Institute of Biology KarRC RAS, Doctoral Student, has been awarded national presidential scholarship. The biologist studies the biochemical adaptations of pink salmon to living in the north. Introduced into Kola Peninsula rivers in the mid-20th century, pink salmon is now a valuable commercial species. Scientists are investigating how a fish with such a short, two-year, life span and no landlocked forms has succeeded in becoming integrated into new ecosystems. The results of this work can be used for the sustainable management of pink salmon commercial stocks and for monitoring the state of salmonid populations

Institute of Economics KarRC RAS becomes a regional venue of the Moscow Academic Economic Forum

An expert roundtable titled "Spatial Development: Contemporary Challenges, New Meanings and Strategies" was held at the Institute of Economics KarRC RAS. The event was a regional venue for the Moscow Academic Economic Forum, launching the discussions on the socio-economic development of territories forerunning the All-Russian Conference dedicated to K. I. Arsenyev "Questions of Economic Geography and Spatial Development Statistics", which will be held this fall.

Results of research in geology, hydrobiology, and linguists presented at KarRC RAS Academic Council meeting

The agenda of the last meeting of the KarRC RAS Academic Council before pausing for the summer was packed: the audience was offered three scientific presentations. Alexandra Stepanova, Leading Researcher at the Institute of Geology KarRC RAS, shared the latest results on the composition and age of ancient rocks of the Karelian Craton. Natalia Kalinkina, Leading Researcher at the of Northern Water Problems Institute KarRC RAS, presented the results of a large-scale study of Lake Onego ecosystem under the impact of climate warming, pollution, and biological invasions. Linguists Svetlana Nagurnaya and Ekaterina Zakharova from the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History KarRC RAS discussed fallacies in Karelian namings by commercial brands

Exhibition devoted to prominent geographer and statistician Konstantin Arsenyev opened in Petrozavodsk

An exhibition titled "Konstantin Ivanovich Arsenyev – Prominent Geographer, Statistician, and One of the Organizers of the Russian Imperial Geographical Society" has opened at the National Library of the Republic of Karelia. It is an output of an educational project led by RAS Corresponding Fellow Nikolai Filatov, with funding from the Russian Geographical Society. Until June 11, in addition to viewing the exhibition, visitors will have a chance to attend lectures by Karelian geographers.
