KarRC RAS Director General Olga Bakhmet took part in the 4th Arctic Science Ministerial meeting in St. Petersburg on April 14. The event was held as planned under Russia’s two-year chairmanship of the Arctic Council.
The meeting recapitulated on the results of scientific research in 2021-2023, and the chairmanship was passed on from Russia to Norway.

During the Russian chairmanship, the focus was on improving the living conditions of people in the Arctic, the ecology, adaptation to climate change at high latitudes, as well as biodiversity conservation, economic development of the High North, and tourism development. Major projects already realized include the world’s first North Pole ice-resistant self-propelled platform and the year-round autonomous facility Snowflake IAS based on renewable energy sources.

Karelian Research Center RAS contributes to the development of basic and applied research in the Arctic. This year KarRC RAS has launched a permanent science-to-practice seminar «Integrated Development of Arctic territories: Expert openion», which is a platform for monitoring ongoing projects and discussing new project ideas.

In 2021-2023 Karelian scientists have been implementing 41 Arctic-related R&D projects. They cover areas such as the ecology, reforestation, agriculture, adaptation of humans to living in the North, sustainable reproduction of the human capital. The amount of funding raised through federal programs is 272.4 million rubles.
