The process of establishment of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the status of a Federal Research Centre (FRC) is completed. This new scientific formation is the result of amalgamating 7 academic institutes and the Karelian Research Centre RAS into an entity. The priority tasks for the FRC KarRC RAS is to promote new interdisciplinary areas of science, upgrade the facilities and resources of the institutes, optimize the administrative and economic operations.

Finland’s Consul in Petrozavodsk Tarvo Nieminen paid an introductory visit to the Institute. The visit included an excursion around the Archaeological Museum and Audio Record Archives. The guest was familiarized with the Institute’s editions. Participants of the meeting told about the Institute’s lines of activity and outlined the pathways for potential cooperation.

On November 20-25, 2017 KarRC RAS hosted the International Conference "Young Biologists Science Week-2017", organized by the Institute of Biology KarRC RAS with support from the Russian Federal Agency for Scientific Organizations, Republic of Karelia Ministry of Nature Use and Environment and WWF Russia within the framework of the National Year of Ecology in Russia. The conference was sponsored by suppliers of scientific equipment and supplies Helicon, LabTech, Beckman Coulter, Dia M, MSU Marine Research Center.

The international conference “International and Interregional Connectivity of Protected Areas in the European North” took place at the Karelian Research Centre RAS on November 13–17, 2017. The conference gathered over 150 participants representing scientific organizations, national and regional authorities, public and non-governmental nature conservation organizations from Russia, Finland and Norway. The conference was held within the framework of the National Year of Ecology in Russia, and was co-funded by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, Ministry of Nature Use and Environment of the Republic of Karelia and WWF Russia Barents Office.
